Most fishermen are happy. Here in Zapata, that fishing happiness is found in Falcon Lake Babes, an “exclusion” group of Ladies only! This ladies are after the Big Cats that can be found in Falcon Lake. They start their year in November and compete once a month, aiming at the Championship in March.
These girls prove that the term fisherwomen has meaning. They have their guidelines and they stick to them. They fish from their boats, which they operate themselves or they may fish from the bank at Beacon Lodge if they do not have a boat. There are no guys allowed in this competition – the men must cheer for their wives from afar.
The first tournament this year is coming up Saturday, November 8, at Beacon Lodge. They will be fishing from 8:00 a.m
. until 3:00 p.m. In March, the grand finale is the huge fish fry (catfish of course) and the crowning of the Catfish Queen. For more information on how to join, contact Betty Ortiz at (956) 236-4590. Betty is one of the five originals who created the Falcon Lake Babes, five years ago.
