April 29th and 30th were exciting days in Zapata. Saturday began with a new Farmers Market at Tractor Supply east on Highway 16. While vendors lured visitors with their plants, vegetable, candies, crafts and more in the parking lot, Other shoppers found items of interest inside the store. Let us look at a few of the highlights.
If you started at the left side of the parking lot of Tractor Supply, your first shop was an array of plants. Next came veggies, skin care products, some beautiful chickens. 
Then take a break and enjoy a bottle of iced water with Store Manager Arthur Solis. At the corner, more veggies and some candied fruit and a plate sale. Handmade jewelry, handmade knives and complete your tour with the Frontier Western Museum items.
Markets are quite often a family affair. Notably the three generations of the Merten family of the Frontier Museum.
Inside Tractor Supply, chairs seemed to be a big attraction, some rested while other family members shopped. My pick was the Freestyle Rocker, not only is it easily folder with a carrying handle – but the shock absorbers on the back make it super comfortable. I took it with me the rest of the day! As I understand, more had to be ordered!
Going on at the same time, was the Take Back Pill Day at the Zapata County Court House. Here was an opportunity to get rid of unused or out-of-date medications – and pick up some delicious Hot Dogs from the Sheriff’s Department! If you missed this day to safely dispose of your old meds, there is a deposit box inside the Sheriff’s Office for that purpose. No questions are asked and this is a safe and secure way to clean your medicine cabinet.
Next you crossed Highway 83 and ventured down 496 to Dr.Ike’s Customer Appreciation event. Stihl and Forney Products were demonstrated and Chili Dogs were hot off the grill, washed down with Gator Ade. Stihl products have just what you need to enjoy keeping your lawn beautiful – whether it is small or large.

orney products may not be as familiar to you, unless you happen to be into welding. Company expert, Rolando Ramirez demonstrated the latest in welding products, with hands on approach. What better way to wrap up your weekend that taking in the Award Winning One Act UIL State Champion Play. “Las Soldaderas”. The play was presented for community enjoyment. The play was special in many ways; it was authored by Nelly E. Cuellar-Garcia, had an all girl cast, it was a first championship for Zapata – and, the first “all girl” play to win!
Have you heard people say there is nothing in Zapata? Well, they are wrong!
