Commissioners approve RSL rate increase

“RSL explained that their business is not showing profit as expected. To remain in service, they requested the increase. ”

After a lengthy Executive Session, the Commissioners approved a $5.00 per month rate increase for RSL Waste Management.

The Commissioners agree that they are for the people and must take their needs into consideration as well as what is best for the County. RSL explained that their business is not showing profit as expected. To remain in service, they requested the increase. Neighboring County rates are $23.67 and $28.00, which would still put Zapata County service under those rates, even with the increase.

Going out for bids, would mean a possible loss of service until the issue was settled, and finding a lower rate may not be possible. The loss of service would put the County in a desperate situation with trash piling up. The current service has been a help in controlling the trash problem.

RSL will be sending out notices to all customers. The rate changes will become effective August 1, 2019.

It may be of interest to residents, that Judge Rathmell was not in the Courtroom during the discussion and that Commissioner Martinez abstained from the voting on the issue.

The next Commissioners Court will be July 22, 2019.
